The Zamfara state Anti Thuggery and criminal offences committee has embarked on arresting those who refuse to accept old Naira notes as legal tender.
The chairman of the committee, Alhaji Bello Bakyasuwa who went round the filling stations and other business centers in Gusau the capital said the old currency must be accepted in the state as directed by Governor Bello Matawalle.
He said that he was ready to arrest anybody who did not comply with Governor Matawalle’s directive of collecting old Naira notes.
“My committee will instantly arrested any person who refuses to accept old Naira notes”.
The Governor has given directive for the arrest of those who do not accept the old Naira notes as legal tender”.
At the NNPC Mega station along Gusau-Sokoto by pass road, the chairman directed motorists to purchase the fuel and pay with either the old or new Naira notes.
A motorist who gave his name as Alhaji Nasiru said he was in the fuel station for several hours and could not buy fuel because of the refusal of the fuel attendants to accept old Naira notes.
He however expressed delight with the arrival of the Anti Thuggery Committee who forced the filling station to collect old Naira notes.
“I am happy that I can now purchase the fuel and pay with the old Naira notes because the Anti Thuggery Committee is here”.
At Abarunat filling station in Gusau, the fuel attendant, Mohammed Mustafa took to his heels and abandoned the filling station on sighting the Anti Thuggery Committee members because he was not collecting the old Naira notes.
He was however arrested and brought to the station where he was directed to start selling and collecting the old Naira notes.
At the grains market, the chairman of the Grains Sellers Association, Gusau local government branch, Alhaji Abubakar Assamrawi told the Anti Thuggery Committees chairman that they would continue to accept the old Naira notes as directed by the Governor.
A chicken meat seller, Hassan Maikaji Kungurmi who sold his chicken meat at the cost of N10,00 on the spot stressed that, he would always abide by the rules and regulations from the government.
He commended Governor Matawalle’s efforts of directing the people of the state to continue accepting the old Naira notes as legal tender.
In his reaction, Alhaji Bello Bakyasuwa appealed to the people of the state to continue using the old Naira notes as directed by the Governor.
