The Union of Journalists (NUJ) Zamfara state chapter has commended Governor Dauda Lawal for initiating State Security Trust Fund as part of measures towards addressing the security situation in the state.
It however expressed dismay over the return of incessant attacks and other forms of insecurity across the state and its negative impact on the people.
The union therefore urged the state government to collaborate with the Federal Government to end the menace.
The union also advised the government to immediately set up a special security committee with membership of traditional rulers, retired security personnel in the state as well as other relevant stakeholders.
These were parts of a communique issued at the end of the union’s congress held in Gusau last Sunday.
The communique signed by the state’s chairman of the union, Comrade Ibrahim Maizare and the secretary, Comrade Ibrahim Gada reads as follows:
“The Congress gave a pass mark to the Zamfara State Executive Governor Dr Dauda Lawal for appointing it’s members into the positions of Managing Directors, and Media Managers of Various Media outfits in the state as well as reviving production at the State Government Owned Newspaper Company (The Legacy Newspaper) after several years of being moribund”.
“The Union commended the management of the State owned Publishing Company (Publisher of the Legacy Newspaper)s under its new Managing Director Ahmad Sani Tsafe for restoring production within the shortest possible time”
“It called on the state government to equip the Organization with additional modern facilities for improved productivity.”
“The Congress commended the Zamfara State Government under the able leadership of Dr Dauda Lawal for payment of Three months backlog workers salaries in addition to payment of pensions within it’s one month period in power”.
“The Union while acknowledging the state government’s resolve in sanitizing payroll of civil servants, appealed for speed in the process as currently many civil servants whose salaries are hanging are in serious hardship”.
“The congress regretted the return of incessant attacks and other forms of insecurity across the state and its negative impact on the people and called on the State Government to strengthen her collaboration with the Federal Government in addressing the menace”.
“The Union commended the Present administration of Governor Dr Dauda Lawal for initiating State Security Trust Fund as part of its measures towards addressing the security situation in the state”
“It advised the government to immediately set up a special security committee with membership of traditional rulers, retired security personnel in the state as well as other relevant stakeholders”.
“The Congress stressed the need for the state government to as a matter of urgency roll out palliatives for people of the state to cushion the devastating effects of fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government”.
“The Congress described as a welcome development, the recent provision of job opportunities to one thousand five hundred youths by Government of Dr Dauda Lawal”.
“It hoped that the number of beneficiaries would be increased considering the number of unemployed persons roaming various streets across the state”.
“The union advised the state government to accord more priority to agriculture which is the main source of employment in the state through provision of inputs and other incentives to farmers”.
“The Congress also called on the state government to include the road behind Gusau Hotel in Nasarawa area into it’s ongoing Gusau township roads rehabilitation projects as report shows that recently two people in the area lost their lives as a result of flood”.
“The Union finally reminded the Zamfara State Governor, Dr Dauda Lawal to redeem his earlier pledge of carrying out total overhauling of the State NUJ Press Center to international standard as conducive working environment will no doubt boost the morale of all working journalists in the state in discharging their responsibilities as watchdogs of the soceity”.
