Zamfara State”commissioner in charge of Security, Alhaji Abubakar Dauran has escaped death when his convoy was attacked by bandits yesterday.
One of the drivers in the convoy, Malam Sule Maru was however killed.
The commissioner, according to sources was returning from Katsina when his convoy was attacked by bandits along Zurmi-Jibiya road.
Speaking to Analyzer news, one of the sources, Mohammed Maigida said, “the bandits had ambushed the commissioner’s convoy where they opened fire, killing one of the drivers and injuring many people”.
Maigida said, “when I heard the sounds of gunshots, I run into the bush for safety as I was not aware of what was happening and when I came out of my hiding place, I saw blood all over the road”.
“I was told that, it was the bandits who attacked the commissioner of security, Alhaji Abubakar Dauran”.
“I also learned that, he escaped unhurt but one of the drivers in the convoy lost his life and many people were injured”. Concluded Maigida.
But in a statement, the spokesperson of the police command SP Mohammed Shehu said, the commissioner’s convoy was caught in a crossfire between two warring bandits groups who were fighting for supremacy.
The statement reads, “The State Police Command has confirmed an unfortunate incident involving Zamfara State government’s delegation returning from an official assignment in Katsina State”.
“On 9th November, 2020, the Command received a report that a delegation of Zamfara State government led by the Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed Dauran was caught in a crossfire between two warring bandit groups who were fighting for supremacy at Dogon Karfe, Gidan Jaja along Zurmi – Jibiya Road in Zurmi local government”.
“The delegation was returning from Katsina State after handing over 26 women and children abducted in Faskari LGA of Katsina State, who were rescued by Zamfara State Government under its peace, reconciliation and disarmament initiative”.
“Unfortunately, a driver in the delegation died in the crossfire”.
“Immediately, the combined Police and Military personnel rushed to the scene to stregthen the existing escort of the delegation”.
“The Command and other security agencies will continue to do their best to ensure the protection of lives and property of the citizens”.
