The Northern Governors forum have been advised to introduce policies that will transform Almajiri System of Education in northern Nigeria.
Director Center for Democratic Development Research and Training Zaria, Professor Abubakar SADIQ gave the advice during a two day workshop on Transforming the Almajiri system of education in the northern region of Nigeria.
Professor Sadiq explained that the aimed of the workshop was to bring all stakeholders on Almajiri system of education together and discuss critical challenges being faced by the system.
The director charged policy makers to formalize the Almajiri system from informal to formal one so as to encourage others in participation.
He said the center has selected some Almajiri schools from 19 northern states and provided them with potable drinking water, toilets, mats and Islamic books to support their learning.
Also speaking, the African representative of Marc Author foundation Dr, Kole Shatima pledged that the Marc Author foundation remains committed in partnering with stakeholders to overcome challenges of Almajiri system of education in Nigeria .
He stressed the need for formulation of laws that would support the Almajiri system of education.
The chairman, Kaduna state council of Chiefs and Emir of Zazzau Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli called on Traditional institutions and Islamic clerics, to put heads together to find solutions to problems affecting Almajiri system of education.
Participants were drawn from universities, research institutions, Islamic scholars, state universal basic education.
The workshop is a partnership between center for Democratic Development Research and Training Zaria, Marc Author foundation among others.
The theme of the workshop was ”Transforming the Almajiri system of education in Northern state of Nigeria”.
