There is a kind of construction activity around the roundabouts of Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi state capital.

The new fad in town is widespread discussion on the roundabouts in Birnin Kebbi that are being reworked and reshaped, undoubtedly to give the city a facelift in line with the expectations of the people.

I did a story a couple of weeks ago, reporting the eyesore which the roundabouts have constituted. A day or two after, people noticed the mobilization of engineers to some of the roundabouts where they took measurements and made drawings, suggestive that the government had indeed responded.

I went round the town this evening to observe the level of work on a total of eight roundabouts that are effected. Workmen are on sight, giving shape to the designs. Of course, it’s difficult for a layman like me to figure out what the shapes of each of them would look like eventually, but one can say, without any fear of contradiction, that some work is indeed being done.

Allegations of neglecting the roundabouts in the capital city have been stringent and unending, with many people expressing anger at the level of lack of concern on the part of governments dating to 1991 when Kebbi state was created. The present government too, which inherited the problem did not escape the hammer of those who feel that Kebbi deserves better.

Let’s wait and see what the designs actually look like at the end of the construction, for us to either thumb them up or give them the sticks.
