Kebbi govt to revitalize education through sustained funding

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State says his administration has within its first eight months in office expended over N9 billion in the construction of classrooms, toulets, provision of textbooks, writing materials, furniture motorised boreholes and hand-pumps, as well as renovation of dilapidated classrooms towards repositioning education in the state.

The Governor who disclosed this at the flagg-off of National Campaign on Out-Of-School Children in the Geo-Political Zones in Nigeria held in Birnin Kebbi on on Tuesday also said 2,000 teachers were trained to improve their pedagogic competence for effective teaching in schools.

He disclosed that six mega schools were being constructed to provide access to education by Almajiris and other categories of out-of-school children in the state.

The State Chief Executive added that 717 Post-Basic Literacy Centers were established across the state for post-basic literacy programme for the Almajiris who had already undergone basic literacy programme under Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA), noting that the programs had already recorded tremendous success in school enrolment drive.

Governor Idris said 3,945 learning centres were established comprising Almajiri, Girl-Child and Nomads Children and more than 500 learners were enrolled into basic literacy programme, revealing that “This has let Kebbi to attain an enviable position amongst the 17 BESDA participating states”.

In his speech, the Minister of State, Education, Dr Yusuf Tanko-Sununu urged Kebbi people to key into the national campaign on out-of-school children and other issues related to education “as government alone cannot do it.”

Tanko-Sununu advised the State Government to establish a strong foundation by constructing more classrooms and recruiting professional teachers duly registered with Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to make it easy for the Federal Government to come in and assist.
