The Executive Director of the Muslim Rights Council (MURIC),  Professor Isiaq Akintola has cautioned that any attempt to dethrone the Sultan of Sokoto would meet with strong resistance from the Muslim community nationwide.

Akintola who spoke at the North West Peace & Security Summit in Katsina State today warned against dethroning the Sultan who  combined traditional and religious authority as the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims.

He cautioned that,  ”Any attempt to dethrone the Sultan would meet with strong resistance from the Muslim community nationwide”.

Akintola maintained that, the entire Muslim Ummah both within and outside the country would rise against the removal of the Sultan.

He therefore advised  Governor Ahmed Aliyu to reconsider any plans against the Sultan for peace to reign in the country.

Reacting to Professor Akintola’s warning, the Vice-President, Alhaji Kashim Shettim urged the Sokoto State government to protect the Sultan, emphasizing the importance of his role.

Shettima highlighted the Sultan’s significance not just to Sokoto state alone, but to the entire nation.
